VATA Athletic Trainers cover Capitol Square Basketball Classic

On February 23rd, Meg Thompson, EdD, ATC, VATL, associate professor of athletic training at Longwood University and VATA past president; and Katie Webb, MS, ATC, VATL, former VATA Region II representative, provided athletic training services for the Capitol Square Classic, a charity basketball game held at VCU’s Seigel Center to benefit the Massey Cancer Center. Dr. Bill Hazel, Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources and also an orthopedist who has previously served as a team physician at Chantilly HS in Fairfax, invited VATA athletic trainers to work with him to cover these games. VCU intern athletic trainer Cloe Claus served as host athletic trainer. The event consisted of two games. In the first game, the Governor’s Office staff fought a tough battle against the lobbyists, but the lobbyists won out. The second game featured an even tougher battle of members of the House and the Senators. It was a hotly contested game that saw the House pull way at the end and win by a comfortable margin. Dr. Hazel introduced the athletic trainers to very many of the players, including Governor Bob McDonnell and Senator Ralph Northam (D, Norfolk). Senator Northam sponsored the secondary school concussion legislation that ultimately was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor McDonnell. The VATA is very grateful to Dr. Hazel for arranging this opportunity to promote athletic trainers at this event.

VATA participates in Capitol Hill Press Conference on Student-Athlete Concussion Legislation

On February 24th, Meg Thompson, EdD, ATC, VATL, associate professor of athletic training at Longwood University and VATA past president, joined representatives of the Children’s National Medical Center and the Brain Injury Association of Virginia in speaking at a press conference held by Senator Ralph Northam, sponsor of SB 652, the bill on student-athlete concussions. During the press conference, Meg affirmed the VATA’s support of SB 652 and emphasized the essential role of the certified athletic trainer in the diagnosis and management of concussions in student-athletes. The inclusion of the VATA, both in the legislation itself and at this press conference, are very positive signs of the role of the athletic trainer in caring for student-athletes in Virginia. Special thanks to Becky Bowers-Lanier, VATA lobbyist, for arranging this fantastic public relations opportunity.
